analytikjena analytikjena Short Application multi EASeriesDetermination of Sulfur in Butane Gas Introduction At room temperature， butane is a gaseous aliphatic hydrocarbon. It is obtained from crude oildistillation in the form of two isomers， but it also occurs in natural gas. Mainly used as a fuel(heating， lighters)， propellant gas or as a basic substance in the chemical industry (butadiene)，accurate monitoring of its content of harmful substances (S / N/ CI) is required for environmentalprotection. Sample preparation and analysis An analyzer of the multi EA Series was used in vertical operation mode in combination with thegas sampling system type GSS. A volumes of 10 ml for each of the different samples was dosedwith this module. The vertical mode is particularly well-suited for the determination of elementcontents in trace and ultratrace ranges. The biphasic combustion process and the use of a surplusof oxygen ensure the complete oxidation of the sample matrices. After the combustion the sulfurcontent of the samples is determined using a highly sensitive UV fluorescence detector. For gas analysis the multi EA 3100 can also be calibrated with suitable liquid standards. This isespecially interesting for analyses in the trace range because no suitable calibration gases can bemanufactured for this purpose. Method settings The method TS_verti_GSS of the standard method library was used for analyzing. Prior to the actual determination， the system is therefore calibrated using sulfur standard solutions(dibenzothiophene in iso octane). To optimize the analysis process， the volume of the dosedsample can be adjusted to match the expected element concentration of the sample. gas samplingsystem type GSS is used to dose gases， but can also be used to test LPG if these were previouslyexpanded into a suitable gas sample bag (e.g. Tedlar) and depressurized under atmosphericpressure. During parallel operation of a UV fluorescence detector the sulfur content can be determinedsimultaneously. Moreover， the described analysis system can be upgraded with accessorymodules for use on other applications， such as determination of the elements chlorine and carbon.
