The focus is on finding new materialsenabling better energy and power density as well as moreefficient energy storage. Electrochemical characterization of batteries,electrode materials and electrolytes The total power output of a battery is determined by theproperties of the electrolytes used and of the anode andcathode materials. Electrochemical methods are suitabletor, e.g.. ·determining current/voltage characteristics ·tests for polarity reversal (charging) of batteries ·characterizing aging effects using impedancespectroscopy ·recording discharge and charge cycles ·determining battery capacity · measuring the electrolyte resistance and charge transferresistance (electrode reaction) ·determining pulse power rating/high-current capability Metrohm Autolab instruments are ideal for the characterization and development of batterymaterials:·anode and cathode materials·separators, electrolytes, boundary layers·determination of iron(II) and iron(III) in lithium ironphosphate Determination ofwater content Lithium-ion battery must be completely free of water(concentration of H,0<20 ppm), because water reactswith the conducting salt, e.g. LiPF, to form hydrofluoricacid. In general, mixtures of anhydrous, aprotic solventsand lithium salts are chosen as electrolytes. The watercontent can be determined reliably and precisely in, forexample, the samples listed below, using Karl-Fischercoulometry and the oven method: Determination of anions and cations In the development and optimization of lithium-ion bat-teries, one of the items of special interest is the contentof ions such as lithium, fluoride and hexafluorophosphatein the electrolyte or in eluates of different components. Using ion chromatography, it is possible to determine var-ious inorganic and organic anions and cations in parallelover a wide concentration range. Any sample prepara-tion steps that might be required (elution, dilution, filtra-tion) can be automated with the Metrohm Inline SamplePreparation (《MISP》) techniques.
