The importance of contact angle in industryOverview Overview The importance of contact anglein industry Contact angle offers a fast and quantitative method toanalyze the wetting properties of the surface.Wettability isan important phenomenon whenever there is a solid incontact with the liquid. As simple as placing a drop ofwater on the surface and looking at the angle which it forms with the solid can tell you a lot about properties ofthe surface. The industries where contact angle measure-ments are utilized range from printing and packaging tothe oil industry. Contact angle is a tool for qualitycontrol Probably one of the biggest areas where contact angle is utilized isin quality control. Contact angle measurements are ideal for that,as they are simple to conduct even in a production environmentand give instant feedback on the quality of the surface treatment orcoating. For example in the coating industry, the surface to whichthe coating is to be applied is often treated with plasma treatmentto improve the adhesion of the coating. After plasma treatment, thecontact angle of the surface can be checked to ensure that thetreatment has been successful. When the coating has been applied,the homogeneity of the coating can be checked by mapping thesurface with contact angle measurements. Contact angle determines the wettability inthe oil reservoir At the oil reservoir, water (or brine), oil and rock are in contactwith each other. The wettability of the rock surface significantlyeffects the recovery rates on any given reservoir. As there are lessand less new oil fields discovered, the utilization of the current onesas wellas the more unconventional oil reservoirs has gained a lot ofattention. To access the oil remaining in the unconventional reser-voirs, new enhanced oil recovery methods are being constantlydeveloped. One of the main mechanisms in enhanced oil recovery isthe wettability alteration. The unconventional reservoirs are typicallyoil-wet, meaning that the oil is tightly attached to the surface of therock. If the wettability state can be altered to more water-wet, therecovery of the oil is possible. Contact angle predicts the quality of inkjetprinting Inkjet print quality is highly dependent on the properties of paperand ink and their interactions. Contact angle measurement isutilized to study the wetting phenomena in inkjet printing appli-cations. The surface tension of the ink and surface free energy ofthe substrate are important parameters in defining the wettabil-ity and adhesion between ink and substrate. Since the image iscreated by the ink-droplets, the contact angle measurement is auseful tool to demonstrate the inkjet printability. The contact angleanalysis allows studying the droplet spreading and absorption viaanalyzes of the drop dimensions and the contact angle with time. Contact angle characterizes functionalsurfaces Functional surfaces i.e. surfaces with special functionalities suchas anti-wetting and icing, self-cleaning and even blood-repellentproperties are finding applications in many different fields. As thesesurfaces are based on either extreme hydrophilicity or hydrophobic-ity, the contact angle is one of the most important measurementsused to characterize them.
