In Situ X‑Ray Diffraction Study on Hydrate Formation at Low Temperature in a High Vacuum

The condition for incorporating simple gases with H 2 O to form clathrate hydrates in protosolar nebula is a subject of topical interest. Methane and carbon dioxide clathrate hydrates have been speculated to exist in outer solar system bodies, but they have eluded direct detection so far. We have constructed a low-temperature and high-vacuum system to prepare and study clathrate hydrates by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments.Upon heating, we found clathrate hydrates can be obtained from the codeposition of methane or carbon dioxide with water outside the equilibrium thermodynamic stability region under high vacuum. We suggested that the hydrate formation is assisted by the phase transformations in the ice, which provide the necessary activation energy to increase the mobility of the guest and water molecules. The results provide a new perspective on how “metastable” gas hydrate can be formed.

The Model RO-600 Ruthenium Oxide Temperature Sensors are thick film resistors which adhere to are available with calibration down to 20mK or grouped/interchangeable and have a nominal resistance of 1,000? at ambient temperature. The ruthenium oxide temperature sensor offers excellent performance characteristics in magnetic field environments. These sensors exhibit an initial small negative magnetoresistance at temperatures below 250 mK at low fields (less than about 1.5 Tesla). The magnetoresistance then becomes positive at larger fields and increases at lower temperatures. This magnetoresistance is repeatable. For example, a resistance change of 8% induced by an 8 Tesla field at a temperature of 80 mK corresponds to a temperature error of 7 mK.

Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) is one of the most powerful methods to measure the thermal properties, most importantly thermal conductivity, of a wide range of bulk and thin film materials and their interface. The principle is to take advantage of the change in the reflectance of the surface to derive the thermal properties when a material is heated up. The set-up includes a pump and probe pulsed-lasers. The pump laser is utilized to generate acoustic pulses. The acoustic pulses could be at a transmittance or reflectance state at an interface, depending upon the properties of the interface. Rayleigh scattering is elastic, and Raman scattering is inelastic. When Raman scattering occurs, there is energy differentiate between the incident photons and scattered photons. Raman spectroscopy exhibits this energy differentiate, which corresponds with the specific vibrational or rotational mode of lattice or molecules. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is a widely used technique for the characterization of the optical and electronic properties of semiconductors and molecules. PL is a process of light emission from any form of matter after the absorption of photons. The incident photon in the visible region excites one of its electrons to the excited state. This effect is called the photoelectric effect, and the emitted electrons are called photoelectrons. According to experiments, the results show that only the light that exceeds the threshold frequency can generate photoelectrons. Below that threshold, no electrons are emitted from materials. That threshold is called the work function, which is attributed to the electron binding energy. The photoelectric effect experiments are commonly performed on quantum devices for characterization at cryogenic temperatures.

M&#246;ssbauer spectroscopy is a spectroscopic method to detect a slight change in energy levels of an atomic through recoil-free resonant absorption and emission of gamma rays in solids. Typically, chemical shift,quadrupole splitting, and hyperfine splitting can be observed. Due to the narrow linewidth of gamma rays,M&#246;ssbauer is extremely sensitive in terms of energy resolution. In the resulting spectra, the gamma-ray intensity is plotted as a function of the source velocity. At velocities corresponding to the resonant energy levels of the sample, a fraction of the gamma rays are absorbed, resulting in a drop in the measured intensity and a corresponding dip in the spectrum. The absorbing nuclei and sample can be characterized by the number, positions, and intensities of the dips in the spectrum. Recently, some charge state and electronic configurations have been confirmed through M&#246;ssbauer spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures.

Noble gases are normally used to dilute guest samples, such as argon, not just because of their unreactivity but also because of their broad optical transparency in the solid-state.

The pressure can normally go up to 100-200 GPa. DAC experiments also can be operated at cryogenic temperatures for different purposes.

X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is a technique to determine the atomic and molecular structure of a crystal based on Bragg diffraction. X-rays are commonly used to produce the diffraction pattern because their wavelength is typically the same order of magnitude (1–100 angstroms) as the spacing d between planes in the crystal. The information on the intensity and angle of the diffractive X-rays can produce a 3D picture of the density of electrons within the crystal, which leads to the mean positions of atoms as well as chemical bonds, disorders, and other information. If it’s a single crystal sample, it’s usually mounted on a goniometer, which can position the sample at selected orientations. The benefits of the low-temperature XRD are to reduce the radiation damage and thermal motion. Low-temperature XRD also helps characterize superconductor materials.

Neutron scattering produces prominent interference and energy transfer effects because neutrons interact primarily with the nucleus, not electron cloud surrounding it in XRD. Nowadays, neutron studies of quantum materials are commonly used for the development of IT technology and superconducting materials. At cryogenic temperatures, the energy distribution of the neutrons can be shifted to the lower energy end of the spectrum. Interesting neutron scattering phenomena are also commonly discovered at low-temperature.

For these reasons Accu-Glass supports Type-K with feedthroughs having Chromel&#174; and Alumel&#174; pins and mating contacts for maximum accuracy. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)equipment used in medical physics requires the generation of stable magnetic fields, and is therefore susceptible to interference from external fields. This might be caused by radio frequency interference, lower frequency interference from electrically-operated equipment - such as lifts within the same building - or from electric trains, even at a considerable distance. It is standard practice to survey an area prior to installation of this sensitive equipment to record the variations in the magnetic field, and thereby select a site with the least disturbance, or to establish the level of magnetic shielding required.

This AN_BBM-01 provides guidance in sizing bus bars to obtain the desired BBM-01 Bus Bar Module sensitivity for DC currents. The BBM-01 determines the current in the bus bar by measuring on both sides of the bus bar, the magnetic field generated from the current through the bus bar. The magnitude of the magnetic field at the sensor is a function of the width and thickness of the bus bar as well as the current through the bus bar. The AKM EM-3242 Non-Contact Angle Position Sensing IC is a very small, low cost and easy to use angle position sensor with a continuous 360 degree range. The EM-3242 provides an absolute position output which means the power can be removed then reapplied and the output will continue to have the correct angle even if the rotating magnet moved while the power was off. The device requires very little power and operates at 3V+/-10%. The EM-3242 senses the angle of magnetic field component that is parallel to the plane of the device package and provides an analog output voltage of 10% to 90% of the supply voltage for a mechanical angle range of 360 degrees of rotation. The device includes a power down ( PDN ) function which reduces the current draw to less than 10uA.

The AN_134KIT consists of a EM-3242 angle sensor mounted on a small 0.25 in. square PCB with a 6 in. flat cable. Also included in the kit are three SmCo24 magnets compatible with the angle sensor; a 0.25 in. diameter magnet, a 0.15 in. diameter magnet and a 0.25 in. square magnet. The sensor works well with smaller magnets, but with less air gap. A Hall Element is a magneto-electric transducer which utilizes the Hall Effect to measure or sense a magnetic field perpendicular to the Element. AKM Hall Elements typically have 4 pins, 2 input pins and 2 output pins, and can be driven by either a voltage or a current source. The output is a Hall voltage that is proportional to the magnetic field. The output from a Hall Element is analog and typically requires additional amplification. AKM uses four different semiconductor materials in its Hall Elements. These different materials represent AKM’s 4 different series of part numbers. The different materials provide different performance characteristics (magnetic sensitivity represented by electron mobility and band gap, operating voltage, temperature sensitivity, etc.) allowing the design engineer to choose the best solution for the particular application.
