In Situ X‑Ray Diffraction Study on Hydrate Formation at Low Temperature in a High Vacuum
The condition for incorporating simple gases with H 2 O to form clathrate hydrates in protosolar nebula is a subject of topical interest. Methane and carbon dioxide clathrate hydrates have been speculated to exist in outer solar system bodies, but they have eluded direct detection so far. We have constructed a low-temperature and high-vacuum system to prepare and study clathrate hydrates by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments.Upon heating, we found clathrate hydrates can be obtained from the codeposition of methane or carbon dioxide with water outside the equilibrium thermodynamic stability region under high vacuum. We suggested that the hydrate formation is assisted by the phase transformations in the ice, which provide the necessary activation energy to increase the mobility of the guest and water molecules. The results provide a new perspective on how “metastable” gas hydrate can be formed.

The Model RO-600 Ruthenium Oxide Temperature Sensors are thick film resistors which adhere to are available with calibration down to 20mK or grouped/interchangeable and have a nominal resistance of 1,000? at ambient temperature. The ruthenium oxide temperature sensor offers excellent performance characteristics in magnetic field environments. These sensors exhibit an initial small negative magnetoresistance at temperatures below 250 mK at low fields (less than about 1.5 Tesla). The magnetoresistance then becomes positive at larger fields and increases at lower temperatures. This magnetoresistance is repeatable. For example, a resistance change of 8% induced by an 8 Tesla field at a temperature of 80 mK corresponds to a temperature error of 7 mK.

Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) is one of the most powerful methods to measure the thermal properties, most importantly thermal conductivity, of a wide range of bulk and thin film materials and their interface. The principle is to take advantage of the change in the reflectance of the surface to derive the thermal properties when a material is heated up. The set-up includes a pump and probe pulsed-lasers. The pump laser is utilized to generate acoustic pulses. The acoustic pulses could be at a transmittance or reflectance state at an interface, depending upon the properties of the interface. The probe laser will detect the reflecting acoustic pulses through a photodetector.

Raman spectroscopy is a technique to detect the vibrational or rotational modes of lattice or molecules. There are two types of scattering, Rayleigh scattering, and Raman scattering. Rayleigh scattering is elastic, and Raman scattering is inelastic. When Raman scattering occurs, there is energy differentiate between the incident photons and scattered photons. Raman spectroscopy exhibits this energy differentiate, which corresponds with the specific vibrational or rotational mode of lattice or molecules. Therefore, it is commonly used to identify and analyze the structure and composition of the sample. It also can be combined with a microscope to observe single nanostructures or microscopic areas called micro-Raman spectroscopy.

Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is a widely used technique for the characterization of the optical and electronic properties of semiconductors and molecules. PL is a process of light emission from any form of matter after the absorption of photons. The incident photon in the visible region excites one of its electrons to the excited state. And then, it radiates a photon as the electron return to the lower energy state. In quantum mechanics, the energy band is quantized, which means only certain transitions are allowed. Therefore, the discontinued energy peaks of luminescence are expected.

When light illuminates a material, due to the energy transfer from the light to the carriers in materials, electrons will be ejected from the surface. This effect is called the photoelectric effect, and the emitted electrons are called photoelectrons. According to experiments, the results show that only the light that exceeds the threshold frequency can generate photoelectrons. Below that threshold, no electrons are emitted from materials. That threshold is called the work function, which is attributed to the electron binding energy. The photoelectric effect experiments are commonly performed on quantum devices for characterization at cryogenic temperatures.

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a spectroscopic method to detect a slight change in energy levels of an atomic through recoil-free resonant absorption and emission of gamma rays in solids. Typically, chemical shift,quadrupole splitting, and hyperfine splitting can be observed. Due to the narrow linewidth of gamma rays,Mössbauer is extremely sensitive in terms of energy resolution. In the resulting spectra, the gamma-ray intensity is plotted as a function of the source velocity. At velocities corresponding to the resonant energy levels of the sample, a fraction of the gamma rays are absorbed, resulting in a drop in the measured intensity and a corresponding dip in the spectrum. The absorbing nuclei and sample can be characterized by the number, positions, and intensities of the dips in the spectrum. Recently, some charge state and electronic configurations have been confirmed through Mössbauer spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures.

Matrix isolation is a spectroscopic study to maintain materials (guest particles) in an inert medium (host matrix) at very low temperatures. It was developed because it’s difficult to obtain gas-phase infrared spectra due to its high chemical reactivity of transient molecules. The mixture of guest particles and the host matrix is deposited on a transparent window, which will be cooled below the melting point. Experiments must be performed under a high vacuum to prevent contaminants from unwanted gases freezing to the cold window.Lower temperatures are preferred, due to the improved rigidity and "glassiness" of the matrix material. Noble gases are normally used to dilute guest samples, such as argon, not just because of their unreactivity but also because of their broad optical transparency in the solid-state.

Magneto-Opto Kerr Effect (MOKE) is a technique to investigate the magnetization structure of materials by the change in intensity and polarization of reflected light from the magnetized surface. MOKE is one of the magneto-optic effects. Kerr effect, investigating reflected light, is similar to the Faraday effect, which is to detect the transmitted light. Upon the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflecting surface and the incident plane, there are polar MOKE, longitudinal MOKE, transversal MOKE, and quadratic MOKE. In addition, low-temp MOKE helps characterize superconductor/magnetic materials in terms of current density and magnetic flux distribution.

Ellipsometry is an optical method to derive the dielectric properties of thin films. Polarized incident light is reflected obliquely from the surface of the sample to generate ellipse of polarization reflected light in terms of amplitude ratio and phase difference, which is measured by a spectroscopic ellipsometer. Information about composition, roughness, thickness, doping concentration and other material characters can be yielded through it. Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC) is an experimental component that generates extreme pressure by compressing a small piece of material with two opposing diamonds. The pressure can normally go up to 100-200 GPa. The goal of this technique is to simulate the deep inside planet environment to synthesize materials and observe phases that don’t happen under normal ambient atmosphere. The sample is able to be viewed through diamonds and also allows optical measurements, such as X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer, and photoluminescence. Commonly, the sample can be heated by resistance heating up to 1000 °C or laser heating up to 5700 °C. DAC experiments also can be operated at cryogenic temperatures for different purposes.

It is frequently used to characterize modern quantum materials with magnetoresistance.Magnetoresistance is a phenomenon of change in the resistance when a sample submitted to a magnetic field.When a sample contains ferromagnetic metals, the interplay of the magnetization of the sample and spin-polarized current is involved. The electrical resistance may chance through magnetoresistance effects that originate from different physical phenomena, such as giant magnetoresistance and tunnel magnetoresistance effects, which lead to the subject of Spintronics.

X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is a technique to determine the atomic and molecular structure of a crystal based on Bragg diffraction. X-rays are commonly used to produce the diffraction pattern because their wavelength is typically the same order of magnitude (1–100 angstroms) as the spacing d between planes in the crystal. The information on the intensity and angle of the diffractive X-rays can produce a 3D picture of the density of electrons within the crystal, which leads to the mean positions of atoms as well as chemical bonds, disorders, and other information. If it’s a single crystal sample, it’s usually mounted on a goniometer, which can position the sample at selected orientations. The benefits of the low-temperature XRD are to reduce the radiation damage and thermal motion. Low-temperature XRD also helps characterize superconductor materials.

Neutron scattering is utilized to understand the properties of materials on the atomic scale. The benefits of the neutron scattering are to have similar wavelengths to the spacing between atoms, similar energy to atoms, no charge to avoid strong scattering by charges to penetrate more deeply into the matter, scattered similar extent by light and heavy atoms, and suitable magnetic moment for magnetism measurement. Neutron scattering produces prominent interference and energy transfer effects because neutrons interact primarily with the nucleus, not electron cloud surrounding it in XRD. Nowadays, neutron studies of quantum materials are commonly used for the development of IT technology and superconducting materials. At cryogenic temperatures, the energy distribution of the neutrons can be shifted to the lower energy end of the spectrum. Interesting neutron scattering phenomena are also commonly discovered at low-temperature.

Thermocouple Feedthroughs
Type-K — Offers broadest temperature range (-200°C to +1250°C), and is the most widely used thermocouple type. For these reasons Accu-Glass supports Type-K with feedthroughs having Chromel® and Alumel® pins and mating contacts for maximum accuracy. Matched pin material for Type-T, J, E, S, R and C thermocouple are not available. Use of standard instrumentation feedthroughs with gold-plated nickel-iron alloy pins, and goldplated copper alloy contacts are offered instead. The error introduced using these pins and contacts is less than 2%. Cable Assemblies — Air side and UHV cable assemblies for all thermocouple types. Refer to specific cables for construction details.

The AN_180KIT takes advantage of the very special lead frame and size of the AKM HG-106C-2U, GaAs, Hall element to detail the method of making a very thin (<0.65mm) thick, high field (+/-1T) magnetic field sensor.The kit incorporates a thin 0.4mm thick PCB and includes all the circuitry to interface with the Hall element. For the most temperature stable output, the HG series Halls should be driven with a constant current source. This kit has a current source of 0.5mA and an instrument amplifier to increase the Hall element output signal to a full scale analog voltage of 2.5V +/- 1.5V for a magnetic field up to +/-1.5T. The output is linear to a magnetic field of +/-1T.

For personnel and equipment safety and measurement accuracy, current measurements on conductors at high voltage should be made only with a conducting shield cylinder placed inside the CT aperture. There should be a low electrical impedance connection from one end only to a reliable local ground. An inner insulating cylinder of adequate voltage isolation should be between the shield cylinder and the conductor at high voltage. Any leakage, induced or breakdown current between the high voltage conductor and the ground shield will substantially pass to local ground rather than through the signal cable to signal ground. Do not create a "current loop" by connecting the shield cylinder to ground from both ends. Current flowing in this loop will also be measured by the CT.

The AKM EM-3242 Non-Contact Angle Position Sensing IC is a very small, low cost and easy to use angle position sensor with a continuous 360 degree range. The EM-3242 provides an absolute position output which means the power can be removed then reapplied and the output will continue to have the correct angle even if the rotating magnet moved while the power was off. The device requires very little power and operates at 3V+/-10%. The EM-3242 senses the angle of magnetic field component that is parallel to the plane of the device package and provides an analog output voltage of 10% to 90% of the supply voltage for a mechanical angle range of 360 degrees of rotation. The device includes a power down ( PDN ) function which reduces the current draw to less than 10uA.

A Hall Element is a magneto-electric transducer which utilizes the Hall Effect to measure or sense a magnetic field perpendicular to the Element. AKM Hall Elements typically have 4 pins, 2 input pins and 2 output pins, and can be driven by either a voltage or a current source. The output is a Hall voltage that is proportional to the magnetic field. The output from a Hall Element is analog and typically requires additional amplification. AKM uses four different semiconductor materials in its Hall Elements. These different materials represent AKM’s 4 different series of part numbers. The different materials provide different performance characteristics (magnetic sensitivity represented by electron mobility and band gap, operating voltage, temperature sensitivity, etc.) allowing the design engineer to choose the best solution for the particular application.
