Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) is one of the most powerful methods to measure the thermal properties, most importantly thermal conductivity, of a wide range of bulk and thin film materials and their interface. The principle is to take advantage of the change in the reflectance of the surface to derive the thermal properties when a material is heated up. The set-up includes a pump and probe pulsed-lasers. The pump laser is utilized to generate acoustic pulses. The acoustic pulses could be at a transmittance or reflectance state at an interface, depending upon the properties of the interface. The probe laser will detect the reflecting acoustic pulses through a photodetector.

Deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) is a very powerful tool to detect the defect concentration and thermal emission rate of semiconductor deep levels by measuring capacitance transients as a function of temperature. It normally used the Schottky diode or p-n junction as a probe. In the process, the probe is forward biased to fill the defects with free carriers by a pulse voltage. After the pulse, the defects start emitting trapped carriers due to thermal emission.

Parahydrogen is one of two magnetic forms of hydrogen gas (H2). It’s commonly used to increase the sensitivity of NMR and MRI measurements. Molecular hydrogen consists of two atoms. Each of the atoms has a spinning nucleus. Based on the direction of the nuclear spin, there are two types of hydrogens. If the spins of the two hydrogen nuclei are aligned, it’s orthohydrogen. The noble gases, i.e., helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), form a group of chemical elements with similar properties, such as odorless, colorless, and monatomic. Most importantly, they are chemically unreactive. Therefore, they are also called inert gases. Because of its chemically and biologically inert and unique isotopic features resulting from radioactive decay, the noble gases are commonly utilized to probe the ocean and Earth process, e.g., rocks and minerals dating. High-purity and quantitative noble gas sample preparation for mass spectrometric analysis are normally required. Therefore, adsorption of noble gases in an ultra-high vacuum activated charcoal trap at cryogenic temperatures is the most common procedure. The desorption of individual noble gas is a function of temperature for mass spectrometric measurements.

A CF flange is The DE202*F-DMX-20B uses a Helium Exchange Gas to decouple the sample from the cold tip of the DE202 Cryocooler. The RD102-EM3242 is a reference design for the AKM EM-3242 Non-Contact Angle Position Sensing IC. The EM-3242 senses the angle of magnetic field component in the top plane of the device package. One with the “In Range” detector enabled and one with the “In Range” detector disabled. In Situ Probing of IgG Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles in Liquids by SEM and ToFSIMS

We report recent results of in situ observations of IgG conjugated gold nanoparticles in a novel portable vacuum compatible microfluidic device using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The unique feature of the liquid flow cell is that the detection window is open to the vacuum allowing direct probing of the liquid surface. The liquid is held within the aperture by the surface tension. The flow cell is composed of a silicon nitride (SiN) membrane and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We have demonstrated that it is fully compatible with vacuum operations for surface analysis. The aperture can be drilled through the 100 nm SiN using a SEM focused ion beam (FIB) or the primary ion beam in ToF-SIMS. Characteristic signals of the conjugated gold nanoparticles were successfully observed through the aperture by both energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in SEM and ToF-SIMS.
