In Situ X‑Ray Diffraction Study on Hydrate Formation at Low Temperature in a High Vacuum

The condition for incorporating simple gases with H 2 O to form clathrate hydrates in protosolar nebula is a subject of topical interest. Methane and carbon dioxide clathrate hydrates have been speculated to exist in outer solar system bodies, but they have eluded direct detection so far. We have constructed a low-temperature and high-vacuum system to prepare and study clathrate hydrates by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments.Upon heating, we found clathrate hydrates can be obtained from the codeposition of methane or carbon dioxide with water outside the equilibrium thermodynamic stability region under high vacuum. We suggested that the hydrate formation is assisted by the phase transformations in the ice, which provide the necessary activation energy to increase the mobility of the guest and water molecules. The results provide a new perspective on how “metastable” gas hydrate can be formed.

Model RO-600(1K) – Ruthenium Oxide RTD – RuO Thermometer from Scientific Instruments

The Model RO-600 Ruthenium Oxide Temperature Sensors are thick film resistors which adhere to are available with calibration down to 20mK or grouped/interchangeable and have a nominal resistance of 1,000? at ambient temperature. The ruthenium oxide temperature sensor offers excellent performance characteristics in magnetic field environments. These sensors exhibit an initial small negative magnetoresistance at temperatures below 250 mK at low fields (less than about 1.5 Tesla). The magnetoresistance then becomes positive at larger fields and increases at lower temperatures. This magnetoresistance is repeatable. For example, a resistance change of 8% induced by an 8 Tesla field at a temperature of 80 mK corresponds to a temperature error of 7 mK.

The simplest magnet system is one where a sample insert has a small 6T magnet bolted at the bottom. Such an insert would have an integral variable temperature insert with sample space of 25 mm. ScanningTunnelMicroscopy

Scanning Tunnel Microscopy (STM) is the earliest technique that was developed in the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) area. It generates imaging surfaces with atomic resolution, which is ~ 0.1 nm in lateral and ~ 0.01 nm in depth. The principle of the STM is based on quantum tunneling. When conducting measurements,a conducting sharp tip as the probe is brought very close to the surface. In the meantime, a voltage bias is applied between the tip and sample to make electrons tunnel through space. The resulting image is the change in the tip height as the tip is scanned over the sample surface. Clean sample surface and tip, and low electronic and physical noise are required for high-resolution STM imaging. The STM can be widely used in UHV or any other gas or liquid ambients from the temperature of ~ 0K up to 1300K.

ScanningElectronMicroscopy

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is one of the most versatile instruments for the examination of the surface topography and composition of the sample. The surface images result from the interaction of a focused electron beam with atoms in the sample, which can achieve < 1 nm resolution. Signals generated during the interaction include secondary electrons (SE), back-scattered electrons (BSE), characteristic X-ray and cathodoluminescence, absorbed current, and transmitted electrons. SE is the most standard signal that SEM detects. It has low energies, which leads to a higher resolution. BSE occurs in deeper places within the sample and strongly relates to the atomic number. It is very often used for composition analysis along with characteristic X-ray spectra. Many SEM measurements are conducted when the sample stage is cooled down to cryogenic temperatures based on different sample properties.

Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) is one of the most powerful methods to measure the thermal properties, most importantly thermal conductivity, of a wide range of bulk and thin film materials and their interface. The principle is to take advantage of the change in the reflectance of the surface to derive the thermal properties when a material is heated up. The set-up includes a pump and probe pulsed-lasers. The pump laser is utilized to generate acoustic pulses. The acoustic pulses could be at a transmittance or reflectance state at an interface, depending upon the properties of the interface. The probe laser will detect the reflecting acoustic pulses through a photodetector.

When light illuminates a material, due to the energy transfer from the light to the carriers in materials, electrons will be ejected from the surface. This effect is called the photoelectric effect, and the emitted electrons are called photoelectrons. According to experiments, the results show that only the light that exceeds the threshold frequency can generate photoelectrons. Below that threshold, no electrons are emitted from materials. That threshold is called the work function, which is attributed to the electron binding energy. The photoelectric effect experiments are commonly performed on quantum devices for characterization at cryogenic temperatures.

MössbauerSpectroscopy

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a spectroscopic method to detect a slight change in energy levels of an atomic through recoil-free resonant absorption and emission of gamma rays in solids. Typically, chemical shift,quadrupole splitting, and hyperfine splitting can be observed. Due to the narrow linewidth of gamma rays,Mössbauer is extremely sensitive in terms of energy resolution. In the resulting spectra, the gamma-ray intensity is plotted as a function of the source velocity. At velocities corresponding to the resonant energy levels of the sample, a fraction of the gamma rays are absorbed, resulting in a drop in the measured intensity and a corresponding dip in the spectrum. The absorbing nuclei and sample can be characterized by the number, positions, and intensities of the dips in the spectrum. The noble gases, i.e., helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), form a group of chemical elements with similar properties, such as odorless, colorless, and monatomic. Most importantly, they are chemically unreactive. Therefore, they are also called inert gases. Because of its chemically and biologically inert and unique isotopic features resulting from radioactive decay, the noble gases are commonly utilized to probe the ocean and Earth process, e.g., rocks and minerals dating. High-purity and quantitative noble gas sample preparation for mass spectrometric analysis are normally required. Therefore, adsorption of noble gases in an ultra-high vacuum activated charcoal trap at cryogenic temperatures is the most common procedure. The desorption of individual noble gas is a function of temperature for mass spectrometric measurements.

Neutron scattering is utilized to understand the properties of materials on the atomic scale. The ARS design has the advantage of placing the cryocooler through the bore of the diffractometer and bolting the cryocooler to the sample mounting flange of the diffractometer. A heater is mounted on the bottom of the calibration fixture (white wires), and a thermocouple thermometer slides into a hole just below the sensor (blue wire).

For personnel and equipment safety and measurement accuracy, current measurements on conductors at high voltage should be made only with a conducting shield cylinder placed inside the CT aperture. There should be a low electrical impedance connection from one end only to a reliable local ground. An inner insulating cylinder of adequate voltage isolation should be between the shield cylinder and the conductor at high voltage. Any leakage, induced or breakdown current between the high voltage conductor and the ground shield will substantially pass to local ground rather than through the signal cable to signal ground. Do not create a "current loop" by connecting the shield cylinder to ground from both ends. Current flowing in this loop will also be measured by the CT.

A Hall Element is a magneto-electric transducer which utilizes the Hall Effect to measure or sense a magnetic field perpendicular to the Element. AKM Hall Elements typically have 4 pins, 2 input pins and 2 output pins, and can be driven by either a voltage or a current source. The output is a Hall voltage that is proportional to the magnetic field. The output from a Hall Element is analog and typically requires additional amplification. The 17900-2212-1-Xm Cable Adapters provide a means of connecting the CPC-XXXX-27 current probes to a USB port for power and to monitoring instruments with a BNC connector input. The cable comes in various lengths listed below. The adapter's USB module incorporates a power ON LED and a low pass filter to condition the USB 5V power and remove any high frequency switching PS noise from the USB port. The module also incorporates an isolation amplifier to isolate the CPC-XXXX-27-BP2 output signal and signal common from the USB Power and Power common. This adapter removes potential additional offset voltages that may be introduced with long cable runs between the probe and monitoring equipment as described below. Compatible with the CPC-XXXX-27-BP2 probes and 17900-2209-0 Extension Cable.
