In Situ X‑Ray Diffraction Study on Hydrate Formation at Low Temperature in a High Vacuum
The condition for incorporating simple gases with H 2 O to form clathrate hydrates in protosolar nebula is a subject of topical interest. Methane and carbon dioxide clathrate hydrates have been speculated to exist in outer solar system bodies, but they have eluded direct detection so far. We have constructed a low-temperature and high-vacuum system to prepare and study clathrate hydrates by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments.Upon heating, we found clathrate hydrates can be obtained from the codeposition of methane or carbon dioxide with water outside the equilibrium thermodynamic stability region under high vacuum. We suggested that the hydrate formation is assisted by the phase transformations in the ice, which provide the necessary activation energy to increase the mobility of the guest and water molecules. The results provide a new perspective on how “metastable” gas hydrate can be formed.

The Model RO-600 Ruthenium Oxide Temperature Sensors are thick film resistors which adhere to are available with calibration down to 20mK or grouped/interchangeable and have a nominal resistance of 1,000? at ambient temperature. The ruthenium oxide temperature sensor offers excellent performance characteristics in magnetic field environments. These sensors exhibit an initial small negative magnetoresistance at temperatures below 250 mK at low fields (less than about 1.5 Tesla). The magnetoresistance then becomes positive at larger fields and increases at lower temperatures. This magnetoresistance is repeatable. For example, a resistance change of 8% induced by an 8 Tesla field at a temperature of 80 mK corresponds to a temperature error of 7 mK.

Scanning Tunnel Microscopy (STM) is the earliest technique that was developed in the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) area. It generates imaging surfaces with atomic resolution, which is ~ 0.1 nm in lateral and ~ 0.01 nm in depth. The principle of the STM is based on quantum tunneling. When conducting measurements,a conducting sharp tip as the probe is brought very close to the surface. In the meantime, a voltage bias is applied between the tip and sample to make electrons tunnel through space. The resulting image is the change in the tip height as the tip is scanned over the sample surface. Clean sample surface and tip, and low electronic and physical noise are required for high-resolution STM imaging. The STM can be widely used in UHV or any other gas or liquid ambients from the temperature of ~ 0K up to 1300K.

Raman spectroscopy is a technique to detect the vibrational or rotational modes of lattice or molecules. There are two types of scattering, Rayleigh scattering, and Raman scattering. Rayleigh scattering is elastic, and Raman scattering is inelastic. When Raman scattering occurs, there is energy differentiate between the incident photons and scattered photons. Raman spectroscopy exhibits this energy differentiate, which corresponds with the specific vibrational or rotational mode of lattice or molecules. Therefore, it is commonly used to identify and analyze the structure and composition of the sample. It also can be combined with a microscope to observe single nanostructures or microscopic areas called micro-Raman spectroscopy.

Matrix isolation is a spectroscopic study to maintain materials (guest particles) in an inert medium (host matrix) at very low temperatures. It was developed because it’s difficult to obtain gas-phase infrared spectra due to its high chemical reactivity of transient molecules. The mixture of guest particles and the host matrix is deposited on a transparent window, which will be cooled below the melting point. Experiments must be performed under a high vacuum to prevent contaminants from unwanted gases freezing to the cold window.Lower temperatures are preferred, due to the improved rigidity and "glassiness" of the matrix material. Noble gases are normally used to dilute guest samples, such as argon, not just because of their unreactivity but also because of their broad optical transparency in the solid-state.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) is one type of photoemission spectroscopies to obtain information about the electronic band structure and Fermi surface of crystals in the reciprocal space. Soft X-ray is irradiated onto the crystal surface, and the kinetic energy of photoelectrons emitted from the surface is measured as a function of polar and azimuthal angles. Because electrons escape from the surface are projected through the surface, the direction of the momentum perpendicular to the surface is not conserved. Therefore, ARPES is an ideal tool for 2D materials because the direction of the electronic momentum of interest is parallel to the surface. The increased sensitivity of excitations can be achieved by reducing thermal energy at cryogenic temperatures.

Neutron scattering is utilized to understand the properties of materials on the atomic scale. The benefits of the neutron scattering are to have similar wavelengths to the spacing between atoms, similar energy to atoms, no charge to avoid strong scattering by charges to penetrate more deeply into the matter, scattered similar extent by light and heavy atoms, and suitable magnetic moment for magnetism measurement. Neutron scattering produces prominent interference and energy transfer effects because neutrons interact primarily with the nucleus, not electron cloud surrounding it in XRD. Nowadays, neutron studies of quantum materials are commonly used for the development of IT technology and superconducting materials. At cryogenic temperatures, the energy distribution of the neutrons can be shifted to the lower energy end of the spectrum. Interesting neutron scattering phenomena are also commonly discovered at low-temperature.

A Hall Element is a magneto-electric transducer which utilizes the Hall Effect to measure or sense a magnetic field perpendicular to the Element. AKM Hall Elements typically have 4 pins, 2 input pins and 2 output pins, and can be driven by either a voltage or a current source. The output is a Hall voltage that is proportional to the magnetic field. The output from a Hall Element is analog and typically requires additional amplification. AKM uses four different semiconductor materials in its Hall Elements. These different materials represent AKM’s 4 different series of part numbers. The different materials provide different performance characteristics (magnetic sensitivity represented by electron mobility and band gap, operating voltage, temperature sensitivity, etc.) allowing the design engineer to choose the best solution for the particular application.

The 2SA-10 is an integrated combination of a CMOS Hall circuit and a thin ferromagnetic disk. In Situ Probing of IgG Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles in Liquids by SEM and ToFSIMS
We report recent results of in situ observations of IgG conjugated gold nanoparticles in a novel portable vacuum compatible microfluidic device using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The unique feature of the liquid flow cell is that the detection window is open to the vacuum allowing direct probing of the liquid surface. The liquid is held within the aperture by the surface tension. The flow cell is composed of a silicon nitride (SiN) membrane and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We have demonstrated that it is fully compatible with vacuum operations for surface analysis. The aperture can be drilled through the 100 nm SiN using a SEM focused ion beam (FIB) or the primary ion beam in ToF-SIMS. Characteristic signals of the conjugated gold nanoparticles were successfully observed through the aperture by both energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in SEM and ToF-SIMS.
