X-20系列超低振动超精细恒温器使用氦气交换冷却样品,这样阻断了传输到样品上的大部分振动,经测试该系统振动级别仅为3-5nm.

由于交换气体没有固体热传导快。所以样品的基本温度会比制冷机高1-2K。另外,为保证交换气体的对流冷却效果,X-20系列需要冷头朝下放置。

X-20恒温器特别适用于各种低振要求实验,如穆斯堡尔谱、量子点等。

当系统正确安装在墙壁和工作台上并进行适当调整后,压缩机工作时产生的振动影响非常小(几乎可以忽略不计)。

加宽(不是扩大!)完全可复制,远低于2%。这种加宽实际上没有任何影响,几乎在所有情况下都可以忽略。但是,比较林宽度的时候需要用同样计算方式!

穆斯堡尔谱配置

为了最大限度地隔离振动,系统的正确安装是非常重要的。ARS提供了一个特殊的超低振动支架用于隔离超低振动恒温器来自冷头和地板的振动。

该支架可以通过调节到恰当的高度来支撑冷头。

低温恒温器安装在低振动平台上。它由一个高质量的花岗岩块(用户提供)组成,由4气腿支撑(可选ARS产品)。额外的弹性隔震器过滤掉从地板到低温恒温器的振动。

系统可通过关闭制冷机来观察振动对实验的影响来进行测试。

This ARS system is being used for basic optical characterization experiments (absorption, reflection and photoluminescence spectra), as well as magneto-optical characterization and time-resolved ultrafast laser spectroscopy.

CS204-DMX-20 - NARROW GAP

This cryostat was sold to Prof. Shannon Yee of the Georgia  Institute of Technology. It will be used for applications which focus on heat  transfer in combustion and energy systems. The cryostat's wide operating temperature range allows the user to characterize thermoelectric performance  across a range of 4 K to 800 K, and perform magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE)  experiments. It was designed to have low vibration levels at the sample and to  integrate with a narrow gap electromagnet.

The cryostat includes the following special features:

  • A custom-designed narrow gap vacuum shroud that integrates with the ultra-low-vibration interface (DMX-20).

  • A narrow gap vacuum shroud, machined from aluminum, which integrates seamlessly with the narrow gap environment of electromagnet pole pieces. (Pictured, top left.)

  • An 800 K high-temperature interface at the tip, with electrical feedthroughs thermally anchored on the cryocooler’s first and second stages. (Pictured, top right.)

  • Instrumentation for accurate temperature control across the range 4 K to 800 K, in the form of a Cernox sensor and cartridge heater.

  • A gold-plated radiation shield. This is the optimal choice for shielding your sample and achieving the lowest base temperatures.

  • Electrical feedthroughs which provide access for characterizing the sample’s resistivity and thermoelectric performance as a function of temperature.

The simplest magnet system is one where a sample insert has a small 6T magnet bolted at the bottom. Such an insert would have an integral variable temperature insert with sample space of 25 mm. Photoluminescence

Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is a widely used technique for the characterization of the optical and electronic properties of semiconductors and molecules. PL is a process of light emission from any form of matter after the absorption of photons. The incident photon in the visible region excites one of its electrons to the excited state. And then, it radiates a photon as the electron return to the lower energy state. In quantum mechanics, the energy band is quantized, which means only certain transitions are allowed. Therefore, the discontinued energy peaks of luminescence are expected.

When light illuminates a material, due to the energy transfer from the light to the carriers in materials, electrons will be ejected from the surface. This effect is called the photoelectric effect, and the emitted electrons are called photoelectrons. According to experiments, the results show that only the light that exceeds the threshold frequency can generate photoelectrons. Below that threshold, no electrons are emitted from materials. That threshold is called the work function, which is attributed to the electron binding energy. The photoelectric effect experiments are commonly performed on quantum devices for characterization at cryogenic temperatures.

MössbauerSpectroscopy

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a spectroscopic method to detect a slight change in energy levels of an atomic through recoil-free resonant absorption and emission of gamma rays in solids. Typically, chemical shift,quadrupole splitting, and hyperfine splitting can be observed. Due to the narrow linewidth of gamma rays,Mössbauer is extremely sensitive in terms of energy resolution. In the resulting spectra, the gamma-ray intensity is plotted as a function of the source velocity. At velocities corresponding to the resonant energy levels of the sample, a fraction of the gamma rays are absorbed, resulting in a drop in the measured intensity and a corresponding dip in the spectrum. The absorbing nuclei and sample can be characterized by the number, positions, and intensities of the dips in the spectrum. Recently, some charge state and electronic configurations have been confirmed through Mössbauer spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures.

MatrixIsolation

Matrix isolation is a spectroscopic study to maintain materials (guest particles) in an inert medium (host matrix) at very low temperatures. It was developed because it’s difficult to obtain gas-phase infrared spectra due to its high chemical reactivity of transient molecules. The mixture of guest particles and the host matrix is deposited on a transparent window, which will be cooled below the melting point. Experiments must be performed under a high vacuum to prevent contaminants from unwanted gases freezing to the cold window.Lower temperatures are preferred, due to the improved rigidity and "glassiness" of the matrix material. Noble gases are normally used to dilute guest samples, such as argon, not just because of their unreactivity but also because of their broad optical transparency in the solid-state.

Magneto-OptoKerrEffect

Magneto-Opto Kerr Effect (MOKE) is a technique to investigate the magnetization structure of materials by the change in intensity and polarization of reflected light from the magnetized surface. MOKE is one of the magneto-optic effects. Kerr effect, investigating reflected light, is similar to the Faraday effect, which is to detect the transmitted light. Upon the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflecting surface and the incident plane, there are polar MOKE, longitudinal MOKE, transversal MOKE, and quadratic MOKE. In addition, low-temp MOKE helps characterize superconductor/magnetic materials in terms of current density and magnetic flux distribution.

When a sample is exposed to infrared radiation, the dipole moment will be excited by absorbing the radiation with a specific wavelength. The vibrational energy will be excited from the ground state to the excited state.Unlike dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) contains many frequencies of light at once and measure absorption. Next, the beam contains a different combination of frequencies of light and repeat it. Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) is one type of photoemission spectroscopies to obtain information about the electronic band structure and Fermi surface of crystals in the reciprocal space. Soft X-ray is irradiated onto the crystal surface, and the kinetic energy of photoelectrons emitted from the surface is measured as a function of polar and azimuthal angles. Because electrons escape from the surface are projected through the surface, the direction of the momentum perpendicular to the surface is not conserved. Therefore, ARPES is an ideal tool for 2D materials because the direction of the electronic momentum of interest is parallel to the surface. The increased sensitivity of excitations can be achieved by reducing thermal energy at cryogenic temperatures.

X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is a technique to determine the atomic and molecular structure of a crystal based on Bragg diffraction. X-rays are commonly used to produce the diffraction pattern because their wavelength is typically the same order of magnitude (1–100 angstroms) as the spacing d between planes in the crystal. The information on the intensity and angle of the diffractive X-rays can produce a 3D picture of the density of electrons within the crystal, which leads to the mean positions of atoms as well as chemical bonds, disorders, and other information. If it’s a single crystal sample, it’s usually mounted on a goniometer, which can position the sample at selected orientations. The benefits of the low-temperature XRD are to reduce the radiation damage and thermal motion. Low-temperature XRD also helps characterize superconductor materials.

The RD101-EM3242 is a reference design for the AKM EM-3242 Non-Contact Angle Position Sensing IC. The EM-3242 senses the angle of magnetic field component in the top plane of the device package. The EM-3242 provides an analog output voltage of 10% to 90% of the supply voltage for a mechanical angle range of 360 degrees of rotation. The EM-3242 has two operating modes. One with the “In Range” detector enabled and one with the “In Range” detector disabled. The “In Range” detector includes internal circuitry which causes the output voltage to drop to 0V whenever the magnetic field level at the EM-3242 is greater than 60mT or less than 10mT.

For personnel and equipment safety and measurement accuracy, current measurements on conductors at high voltage should be made only with a conducting shield cylinder placed inside the CT aperture. There should be a low electrical impedance connection from one end only to a reliable local ground. Any leakage, induced or breakdown current between the high voltage conductor and the ground shield will substantially pass to local ground rather than through the signal cable to signal ground. Using the SPI Cure™ with a standard heating block for 1.5 snap-cap conical tubes, at temperatures from 55–59°C, we have achieved safe and complete polymerization of LR White (acrylic) and SPI Pon (epoxy) resins in both protected and unprotected BEEM® capsules as well as 00-gelatin capsules. Please note that this report concerns a novel3 adaptation of dry-block heating technology designed for molecular biological procedures.In this test, we have purposefully used only resin blanks.Finally, we report that in the case of LR White, no degradation of the material of which the BEEM® capsules are constructed has been observed in either ‘protected’ or ‘unprotected’ heating regimes. We recommend careful testing of embedding molds not specifically mentioned in this paper.

In Situ Probing of IgG Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles in Liquids by SEM and ToFSIMS

We report recent results of in situ observations of IgG conjugated gold nanoparticles in a novel portable vacuum compatible microfluidic device using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The unique feature of the liquid flow cell is that the detection window is open to the vacuum allowing direct probing of the liquid surface. The liquid is held within the aperture by the surface tension. The flow cell is composed of a silicon nitride (SiN) membrane and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We have demonstrated that it is fully compatible with vacuum operations for surface analysis. The aperture can be drilled through the 100 nm SiN using a SEM focused ion beam (FIB) or the primary ion beam in ToF-SIMS. Characteristic signals of the conjugated gold nanoparticles were successfully observed through the aperture by both energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in SEM and ToF-SIMS.
