Hydrogen isotherms for MOF-177, Zn4O(1,3,5-benzenetribenzoate)2, crystals were independently measured by volumetric and gravimetric methods at 77 K to confirm its hydrogen uptake capacity and to establish the importance of calibrating gas adsorption instrumentation prior to evaluating H2 storage capacities. Reproducibility of hydrogen adsorption experiments is important because non-systematic errors in measurements can easily occur leading to erroneous reports of capacities. The surface excess weight percentage of hydrogen uptake in MOF-177 samples is 7.5 wt% at 70 bar, which corresponds to an absolute adsorbed amount of 11 wt%. These values are in agreement with our previous report and with those found independently by Southwest Research Institute. Considering its well-known structure and its significant H2 uptake properties, we believe MOF-177 is an excellent material to serve as a benchmark adsorber.

The addition of metal nanoparticles to coolants used in thermal control systems can dramatically increase the thermal conductivity of the base fluid. Such metal nanoparticle-fluid composite materials are referred to as nanofluids and their use as coolants has the potential to reduce the weight and power requirements of spacecraft thermal control systems. The thermal conductivity of nanofluids is dependent on the concentration, size, shape, surface chemistry, and aggregation state of the constituent nanoparticles. The effects of nanoparticle loading concentration and the aspect ratio of the nanoparticles on the thermal conductivity and viscosity of water and ethylene glycol based coolants were investigated. Silver nanorods with a diameter of 55 ± 12 nm and an average length of 12.8 ± 8.5 μm at a concentration of 0.5% by volume increased the thermal conductivity of water by 68%. The thermal conductivity of an ethylene glycol based coolant was increased by 98% with a silver nanorod loading concentration of 0.5% by volume. Longer nanorods had a greater effect on the thermal conductivity than shorter nanorods at the same loading density. However, longer nanorods also increased the viscosity of the base fluid to a greater extent than shorter nanorods.

The thermal analysis of films in the 21st century: Relevance

Abstract Films may be considered as wide fibers, or as unique material geometry possessing two dimensional symmetry (X, YZ). Potentially different uniformity issues along the machine (long) and transverse directions of the film, characterization of Z-axis performance—especially as films become “thin” and the characterization/identification of surface modification, introduce the need for careful sampling strategies if the resulting thermal analysis data is to be reflective of either process history or end-use performance or both. Two dimensional imaging by a combination of techniques—i.e., DSC–WAXS–FTIR–AFM exploit the convenience of the sample geometry, while aiding in the definition of structural complexity. Molecular spectroscopy techniques (DMA, TSC) provide a sensitive and instructive tool for examining novel surface or interface chemistry. Characterization under biorelevant conditions (37 ◦C, aqueous, standard saline, presence of adhesive and other proteins, presence of cells) is critical for the generation of meaningful data on films to be utilized biologically (cell culture, tissue engineering substrates, biochips). Of special interest are strategies for accelerated aging that allow prediction of biological or biorelevant performance. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose an improved method for the analysis of Thermally Stimulated Currents (TSC) measured on highly irradiated silicon diodes. The proposed TSC formula for the evaluation of a set of TSC spectra obtained with different reverse biases leads not only to the concentration of electron and hole traps visible in the spectra but also gives an estimation for the concentration of defects which not give rise to a peak in the 30–220K TSC temperature range (very shallow or very deep levels). The method is applied to a diode irradiated with a neutron fluence of fn ¼ 1:82  1013 n/cm2.

Thermally stimulated current (TSC) techniques provide information about oxide-trap charge densities and energy distributions in MOS (metal-oxide-semiconductor) capacitors exposed to ionizing radiation or high-®eld stress that is dicult or impossible to obtain via standard capacitance±voltage or current±voltage techniques. The precision and reproducibility of measurements through repeated irradiation/TSC cycles on a single capacitor is demonstrated with a radiation-hardened oxide, and small sample-to-sample variations are observed. A small increase in E0d center density may occur in some non-radiation-hardened oxides during repeated irradiation/TSC measurement cycles. The importance of choosing an appropriate bias to obtain accurate measurements of trapped charge densities and energy distributions is emphasized. A 10 nm deposited oxide with no subsequent annealing above 4008C shows a di€erent trapped-hole energy distribution than thermally grown oxides, but a similar distribution to thermal oxides is found for deposited oxides annealed at higher temperatures. Charge neutralization during switched-bias irradiation is found to occur both because of hole-electron annihilation and increased electron trapping in the near-interfacial SiO2. Limitations in applying TSC to oxides thinner than 05 nm are discussed.
