The quality of indexable inserts is highly dependent on their geometry and surface properties. Durability, feed rates and overall machining properties are influenced by the cutting geometry such as cutting angle and radius. Traditionally, quality assurance methods for geometry accuracy have been restricted to tactile methods. However, tactile measurement devices do not allow the measurement of specific radii or angles due to the mechanical contact of the stylus to the surface. The optical 3D measurement device InfiniteFocus removes inaccuracies caused by tactile inspection methods. It provides highly accurate measurement of angle and profile plus the additional functionality of roughness, waviness. Surfaces with steep flanks and varying reflective properties are usually not measurable with conventional surface measurement techniques, even though there is an ongoing miniaturization of components and rising demand for automation in industry. A solution can be provided by “Focus Variation”, a new optical measurement technique that allows the robust measurement of complex surfaces with vertical resolutions up to 10 nm. In addition to topographic data, true colour information that is perfectly registered to the height data is obtained. The optical 3D measurement device “InfiniteFocus” is based on this new technology and provides a significant improvement in quality assurance. Allowing surface measurements in the micro and nano range as well as relatively large components, the Instrument can be used in the lab and as a measurement tool during production.

Equilibrium Conformations of Liquid Drops on Thin Cylinders under Forces of Capillarity. A Theory for the Roll-up Process

The way that the conformation of a liquid drop adhering to a circular, cylindrical fiber changes when the contact angle is increased from a low initial value is discussed in terms of the classical Laplace excess pressure in the drop. It is shown that an axially symmetrical conformation becomes metastable when the contact angle exceeds a critical value which is dependent on the fiber radius and the drop volume. Beyond this point an axially unsymmetrical conformation is favored. The transition between conformations is accompanied by a reduction in the drop/fiber contact area over and above that expected from the contact angle increment bringing about the metamorphosis. The transition described corresponds to the classical roll-up process of detergency first described by N. K. Adam.

Roselike Microstructures Formed by Direct In Situ Hydrothermal Synthesis: From Superhydrophilicity to Superhydrophobicity

We describe the fabrication of roselike microstructures by the direct in situ hydrothermal synthesis method. The as-prepared roselike microstructure film exhibits excellent superhydrophilic properties, absorbing a water droplet of 4 íL in less than 40 ms. Moreover, after a further modification with a self-assembled monolayer of octyltrimethoxysilane, the film changes its wetting properties from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity with a contact angle as high as 154° and a tilt angle lower than 3°.

Self-Assembled Monolayers of Dendron Thiols for Electrodeposition of Gold Nanostructures: Toward Fabrication of Superhydrophobic/Superhydrophilic Surfaces and pH-Responsive Surfaces

This paper describes the fabrication of surfaces with different wettability, superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic, and pH-responsive properties. We used a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of a dendron thiol as the underlying surface for electrodeposition of gold nanostructures. After this modification with a SAM of n-dodecanethiol or 11-mercaptoundecanol, the surface shows remarkable superhydrophobic properties with a contact angle of about 155° and a tilt angle of less than 2° or superhydrophilic properties with a contact angle of about 0°, respectively. Moreover, a large-scale pH-responsive surface was obtained by modification with 2-(11-mercaptoundecanamido)benzoic acid (7) (MUABA). The pH-responsive behavior was amplified by using rough surfaces.

Electrorheological properties of chitosan nitrate suspension

Chitosan nitrate (CTS-HNO3) as an electrorheological (ER) material was synthesized by a simple method. The nontoxic and facile chitosan (CTS) as a substrate of the materials, as well as nitric acid were chosen as starting materials. The ER properties of the suspensions of the CTS and CTS-HNO3 materials were researched. The CTS-HNO3 suspension has much better ER performance than the CTS suspension. The ER effect (relative shear stress, τr = τE/τ0) of the CTS-HNO3 suspension (25 wt%) in silicon oil under a dc electric field reached 94 at a shear rate of 14.5 s−1,which is eight times higher than that of the CTS suspension, where τE and τ0 are the shear stresses at the electric field strengths of 4.2 and 0.0 kV/mm, respectively. The formation of chitosan nitrate helped to decrease effectively the shear stress at zero electric field, and to enhance the ER effect of chitosan material markedly. The influence of the surface energy, conductivity, dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent on the ER property of the particle materials was investigated, and the results indicate that surface energy played a predominant role. Moreover, the magnitude of the ER effect of the CTS-HNO3 suspension was closely related to the shear rate. In addition, the chitosan nitrate had better thermal stability. The properties of CTS-HNO3 are advantageous in its application as an ER material.

Crosslinked Chitosan Doped with Y2(CO3)3 and Surface

Novel electrorheological materials based on crosslinked chitosan doped with Y2(CO3)3 were synthesized with biocompatible chitosan as the substrate of the materials. The electrorheological performance, surface energy, and thermal decomposition behavior of the materials were investigated as functions of the composition change. The results show that doping Y2(CO3)3 can improve effectively the electrorheological performance of crosslinked chitosan with the formation of a metal–polymer complex when the doping degree is suitable. The surface energy plays an important role in influencing the electrorheological properties of the material.

Using the contact angle measuing unit OCA20 with the SCA22 software and the pendant drop method results in a quick and easy way of charaterizing the netwoking properties of a liquid. The upper surface tension is directly accessible and the polar and dispersed components can easily be calculated after determining the outer surface tension compared with a non polar liquid. In the case of the frequently used solvent DPM the previously unknown polar and dispersed components of the upper surface tension were established, knowledge of which for many networking processes e.g.coatings is of decisive impoutance.

Self-Assembly of Large-Scale Micropatterns on Aligned Carbon Nanotube Films The fabrication of well-defined structures with nanoscale materials is a key technology,[1] and self-assembly is an efficient and often preferred process to build micro- and nanoparticles into ordered macroscopic structures.[2] As carbon nanotubes are attractive materials for nanotechnology because of their interesting physicochemical properties and molecular symmetries,[3–6] it is necessary to control the architecture of carbon nanotubes on the substrates. Most patterned carbon nanotubes are formed on prepatterned substrates or prepatterned catalysts during the fabrication process.[7–9] Herein we report the first use of a long-range force (capillary force) in the self-assembly of three-dimensional (3D) micropatterns on aligned carbon nanotube films through a water-spreading method after the growth of the carbon nanotube. It is considered that low-density regions or vacancies of carbon nanotube films play an important role in the formation of the pattern. Controlling Pore Size and Wettability of a Unique Microheterogeneous Copolymer Film with Porous Structure We have fabricated a mesoporous copolymer thin film whose surface pore size can be varied from submicrometer to micrometer. Our fabrication method requires microphase separation induced by a silicone surfactant during the rapid solvent evaporation and polymerizations. The sample films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocalRamanspectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ infrared (IR), attenuated total reflection (ATR), and other techniques. The characterization results show that the pore size can be controlled by altering the concentration of silicone surfactant. Furthermore, the mesoporous copolymer film with hydrophobic convex and hydrophilic concave structure exhibits both hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The unique properties can be attributed to the special heterogeneous porous structure of the polymer film. The resulting porous polymer films can be utilized in many fields, such as self-cleaning, antiadhesives, adsorption, and separation. These mesoscale-patterned surfaces can also provide a model system for investigating the interface properties of actual surfaces. (请下载全文欣赏)

Oriented Growth of Self-Assembled Polyaniline Nanowire Arrays Using a Novel Method A novel method for fabrication of highly oriented polyaniline (PANI) nanowires without removal of the template was developed by combining self-assembly and template synthesis techniques. By using a self-assembly process under inhibition conditions, oriented arrays of PANI nanowires growing out of the nanoporous template were obtaioned, with nanowire diameters ranging from 110 to 190 nm and lengths of several micrometers.
