Laser Imaging in Sprays

LaVision‘s SprayMaster laser imaging system applies LIF and Mie imaging on pulsed laser light sheets. While the volume dependent LIF signal scales with the droplet mass, the simultaneously excited Mie signal is proportional to the droplet surface. Hence the LIF/Mie image ratio is used for planar global droplet sizing yielding the Sauter Mean Diamter (D32) distribution over the measured spray cross section.
A special 2-color Tracer-LIF technique allows the simultaneous visualization of the liquid and vapor phase of the evaporating spray.

Phase and Space Scan Imaging of
Periodic Sprays

DaVis supports time resolved 3D spray imaging applying phase scans in combination with light sheet traversing. Such a measurement sequence can be programmed in DaVis and then simply started with a button click.

Multiphase Flow Field Imaging in Sprays

PIV imaging is applied to the spray droplets and the surrounding gas (with additional seeding) for multiphase flow field imaging in sprays using LaVision‘s low and high speed FlowMaster PIV systems.

  • The effect on fuel consumption and emissions of switching from two-valve to single-valve EIVC operation in order to generate swirl intake structures in a four-valve, pent-roof gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine has been investigated. Mie imaging of the fuel spray propagation, along with PIV measurements of the intake flow field have been taken in an optical engine, and fuel economy and emissions measurements have been made on a thermodynamic engine with identical geometry and ancillary systems. The measurements show that fuel economy can be improved substantially when EIVC valve operation is employed, and results differ when only a single inlet valve is activated. Bulk swirl structures are generated in the engine cylinder which affect the atomisation and transportation of the fuel spray and engine performance. For fuel injection after the inlet valve closing point, the reduction in shear forces and mixing from the intake air structures is sufficient to cause engine misfires.

  • To understand and optimize the combustion processes in new types of internal combustion engines, like gasoline direct-injection engines, non-intrusive laser-based diagnostics methods have proven to be versatile and important tools to measure combustion characteristics. Most engine developers already rely on optical methods in the development of new engines. To guarantee accurate and reliable results of optical measurements it is necessary to carefully evaluate and characterize these techniques under realistic conditions. In this work a variety of laser-based diagnostics techniques, mostly based on the tracer- LIF principle, have been evaluated for their applicability and limitations and have been applied to different spray systems – reaching from single droplets, over model sprays to fuel sprays in a firing test engine. The tracer-laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) method is based on doping the fuel with a fluorescent substance whose fluorescence characteristics are used to measure various physical properties of the spray, such as temperature, droplet size, or droplet velocity. From these properties information about heat and mass-transfer mechanisms in the spray can be gained. However, the characteristics of the used tracers must be known in detail in order to guarantee useful and comparable results. Therefore, in this work various tracers were characterized in terms of their evaporation and temperaturedependent properties. The tracers Atto 680, Rhodamine 800 and Rhodamine B have further been tested for their applicability to realistic fuels.

  • Zooplankton feed in either of three ways: they generate a feeding current, cruise through the water, or they are ambush feeders. Each mode generates different hydrodynamic disturbances and hence exposes the grazers differently to mechanosensory predators. Ambush feeders sink slowly and therefore perform occasional upward repositioning jumps. We quantified the fluid disturbance generated by repositioning jumps in a mm-sized copepod (Re ~ 40). The kick of the swimming legs generates a viscous vortex ring in the wake; another ring of similar intensity but opposite rotation is formed around the decelerating copepod. A simple analytical model, that of an impulsive point force, properly describes the observed flow field as a function of the momentum of the copepod, including the translation of the vortex and its spatial extension and temporal decay. We show that the time-averaged fluid signal and the consequent predation risk is much less for an ambush feeding than a cruising or hovering copepod for small individuals, while the reverse is true for individuals larger than about 1 mm. This makes inefficient ambush feeding feasible in small copepods and is consistent with the observation that ambush feeding copepods in the ocean are all small, while larger species invariably use hovering or cruising feeding strategies.
