Viscosity is resistance to flow. Viscous samples require special consideration. There are several separate issues, and these apply whether one desires to measure interfacial tension or contact angles. Viscosity is measured in milli Pascal seconds (mPa s) which is numerically identical to centi Poise (cp). Water has a nominal viscosity of 1cp or 1mPa s. Viscosity is a strong function of temperature, dropping rapidly as temperature rises. A good place to get reference values for viscosity is the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (www.crcpress.com).

This sample exhibited an equilibrium water contact angle of zero degrees, but the spreading is not instantaneous. The FTÅ200 can measure this spreading time. The following figures illustrate the drop profile at various times. The resultant contact angle and base width is also graphed. Differing amounts of surfactant in the resin would cause the drop to spread at different rates. To do comparative work of this nature, the drop volume should be standardized to within, say, 10% on each sample. The pump forms a pendant drop on the tip which is allowed to grow until its bottom touches the surface, at which time the drop detaches from the tip and forms a sessile drop.

Cotton sheeting was tested for contact angle and absorption using a customer supplied ink as the test fluid. Two samples were provided: one had a special treatment and the other did not. Small droplets, in the 2 to 3μl volume range, were deposited on the sample by positioning the dispense tip just above the surface and growing the pendant drop until its bottom touched the sample and the drop detached. Sessile drop contact angles were measured with water on two types of plastic lens with a standard FTÅ200 instrument. One lens had an antireflection coating and the other did not. The purpose of the measurement was to both show the differences between the lens coatings and the process of making measurements on the "side" of a lens where the surface is obviously not flat. A secondary purpose was to see if the curvature of the lens was sufficient that local baseline correction was necessary.

Contact angles are well established as a sensitive means of contamination detection on surfaces. These measurements are straightforward on flat, solid surfaces and can be extended to curved surfaces with a little effort. When the surface is either • rough, e.g., a medium grit sandpaper • a fabric of fibers • perforated with holes then it is composite in the sense that it alternates between air and substrate as one moves microscopically across the surface. It is important to understand that the contact angles reflect the composite material and not just the original solid substrate.

The FTÅ4000 can place very small drops on a sample and measure the contact angle. To produce small drops, the instrument uses glass capillary needles and a piezo electric pump to control the small volumes required. Two cameras are provided so the user can place the drops at a precise location on the sample. Figure 1 shows a small drop ready to be placed on the sample, which in this case is a printed business card. The width of the printing is measured to illustrate the size of the drop (in the bottom of the "2"). The instrument can produce drops which are considerable smaller than the one illustrated, but then the "weave" or roughness of the paper becomes an issue in making contact angle measurements.

Two injection molded plastic samples were tested for mold release agent. The samples were hemispherical in shape. Contact angles were measured using water and methylene iodide (diiodomethane). The samples had been handled somewhat, so it was not surprising there was some variation in measurements at different locations. Because of this, five measurements of each fluid were made on each sample. The figure below shows a typical drop, in this case methylene iodide on sample #2.

Contact angles using water were measured on five coatings used on aircraft. These coatings are very uniform spatially but do exhibit hydration, meaning their contact angle changes as a function of exposure to the vapor of the test fluid (i.e., water). Therefore each contact angle was measured as a function of time, with t = 0 corresponding to the first contact of the water with the dry surface. Two contact angles can be identified: an initial angle and a steady-state angle. These surfaces equilibrated in about 15 seconds, as can be seen from the representative graphs of contact angle versus time presented below.
