A multifaceted approach to identifying and quantifying non-targeted emerging compounds in environmental surface and ground water samples impacted by reclaimed water irrigation has been demonstrated. ? HRAM can be used to identify organic micropollutants in wastewater-impacted environments, golf course runoff, and storm water ponds. ? Online SPE coupled with a triple quadrupole MS can be used to quantitate micropollutants in water samples down to the sub-ppt (ng/L) level. ? Future work will include studying the toxicological impact of these compounds on aquatic species.

Evaluation of a Novel High-Throughput Forensic Screening Method for Drugs of Abuse in Urine with Paper Spray Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry

We have shown an easy-to-use technique (no sample preparation, no chromatography) that shows extraordinary potential for the quantitative analysis of drugs of abuse in forensic toxicology when coupled to the TSQ Quantiva triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, all in much shorter timeframes than it is possible using liquid chromatography techniques. Quantitative analysis of several drugs in a mix from 7 μL of urine is demonstrated, with LODs down to 0.5 ng/mL and LOQs slightly higher and compound dependent. As the electrospray signal from paper spray lasts ~35 s, it can accommodate many SRM transitions per sample. This, coupled to available faster scanning speed on the TSQ Quantiva mass spectrometer, opens the stage for the analysis of more complex mixtures. To investigate possible interferences in the SRM transitions, isolation widths of 0.2 amu or alternative transitions should be investigated on the TSQ Quantiva mass spectrometer. Compounds affected by matrix effects might benefit from alternative solvent/modifier combinations and advances in paper spray substrate development.

EPA Draft Method 543 Quantitation of Organic Pesticides in Drinking Water Using Online Pre-concentration/Solid Phase Extraction and Tandem Mass Spectrometry

This poster has demonstrated the analysis of organic chemicals in drinking water pursuant to the US EPA’s draft method 543. Excellent linearity over the calibration range.Sensitivity in the low ppt and ppq range (ng/L-pg/L) Further work will determine LCMRL levels for those compounds not determinedin this experimental work. Demonstrated the online SPE analysis of these compounds in a 21 minute run time.

Quantitation-Enhanced Data-Dependent MS/MS scanning on a triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometer enables simultaneous metabolite identification and quantitation of a parent drug. The selectivity provided by this technique helps to increase the detection of metabolites. When the QED-MS/MS and RER techniques are coupled, the structure and concentration profiles of parent drugs and metabolites can be obtained simultaneously, thus increasing the bioanalytical throughput in drug discovery laboratories.
