课程详情

On-surface chemical reactions on single molecules leads to fundamental chemical insights, such as better understanding bond-order relationships in reaction intermediates and products. Here, based on high-resolution atomic force microscopy/scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments, we will demonstrate the power of atom manipulation in two contexts: on conductive and on non-conductive substrates. On conductive substrates we will show how atom manipulation can generate a Diels-Alder reaction and couple terminal alkynes, on non-conductive substrates we will demonstrate how controlling the charge state of individual molecules can promote the reversible dissociation of a single molecule.

讲师简介:

Shadi joined KAUST in the beginning of 2022. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Applied Physics and affiliated with the KAUST Solar Center. Shadi obtained his bachelor and master’s degrees in physics at the University of Campinas in Brazil, in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Afterwards, he was a Predoctoral researcher at IBM Research – Zurich from 2014 to 2018. He obtained his PhD degree in 2018 from ETH Zurich. He was then a Postdoctoral researcher at IBM Research – Zurich from 2019 to 2022. Shadi has received the ETH medal for outstanding PhD thesis and the Applied Physics award from the Swiss Physical Society. His research focuses on individual nanoscale systems (atoms, molecules) and surfaces, probed by surface science techniques. He has authored papers in Science, Nature Nanotechnology, Physical Review Letters, Nature Chemistry, JACS, Nature Communications, etc...
