The KimaTM Pump is a microfluidic pump designed to aid cell culture (e.g. endothelial cells) under physiological conditions (shear flow) in various biochips and flow chambers, including Cellix's Vena8 Endothelial+ biochips where it is possible to culture 8 cell monolayers simultaneously over 24-48 hours. The KimaTM pump is controlled by the iKimaTM Application for use with the iPod Touch and iPhone. The iPod Touch is included with the sale of the Kima pump. The KimaTM pump is placed inside a standard incubator while the iPod Touch or iPhone, as it's controller, sits on the Universal dock outside the incubator. The KimaTM pump connects easily to Cellix's Vena8 Endothelial+ biochip and other manufacturer's flow chambers via fully autoclaveable tubing and delivers pulses of fresh media to cells seeded inside the microchannels.
The KimaTM Pump is also applicable across a number of other applications including:
· Biofilm culture / Biofilm growth: in this case, the Kima pump supports the flow of bacteria through a coated microcapillary enabling bacterial colonization of the surface. Bacteria adhere to the surface, which may be coated with different proteins (e.g. monomannose, trimannose etc.) and subsequently attach to each other forming colonies and causing the biofilm to grow.
· Nanoparticle uptake studies: the Kima pump supports the flow of nanoparticles over cells which have been cultured inside the microchannels of the biochips. This set-up can be used to investigate nanoparticle uptake by endothelial cells or other cell types.
· Toxicology studies: the Kima pump supports the flow of compounds over cells which have been cultured inside the microchannels of the biochips. This set-up can be used to investigate toxicity of compounds to different cells types over different time periods.
