粪肠球菌（Enterococcus faecalis）为革兰氏阳性，过氧化氢阴性球菌。其原属于链球菌属，因其与其他链球菌同源程度低，甚至不到9%，故将粪肠球菌与屎肠球菌从链球菌属中分离出来，将其归为肠球菌属。粪肠球菌是一种兼性厌氧型革兰氏阳性乳酸菌，菌体形态为球状或链状，直径大小，无荚膜，无芽孢，对环境适应力和抵抗力强，可耐受四环素、卡那霉素、庆大霉素等多种抗生素，生长条件要求不严格。它可利用精氨酸为能源，发酵山梨醇，不发酵阿拉伯糖。在简单的培养基上生长不需叶酸。
