　　The Department of Chemistry at Columbia University in the City of New York is looking to fill the position of Associate Research Scientist to serve as the Director of the Shared Materials Characterization Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for the continuous functioning of the instruments in the SMCL, including periodic maintenance and troubleshooting any problems.The incumbent will design and implement a new web-based reservation and billing system.

　　The successful candidate will have expertise in X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, microscopy, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis of materials, and will collaborate with faculty on research. The Director, in consultation with faculty, will assess the facility’s need for new equipment and prepare and submit grant proposals. The Director will establish training procedures including a series of demonstrations and written user guides to train the students in proper techniques and data interpretation.

　　The position will be supported by the Sulo and Aileen Maki Trust. Maki Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants with outstanding research and leadership potential in a broad range of topical areas related to water issues relevant to southern Nevada. This position is located in Las Vegas, NV.

　　The Postdoctoral position will be linked to existing research programs within DRI and must be focused on one or more aspects of the environmental fate of pharmaceuticals or pesticides in water/sediment systems. Topical areas of research include:

　　• Delineation of the fate of pharmaceuticals or pesticides and their degradation byproducts within the environment

　　• Quantification of the rate of transport and degradation within the environment (water/sediment/biosphere)

　　• Development of novel methods for degrading pharmaceutical or pesticides in water supply systems

　　• Assessment of risk or epidemiology of pharmaceuticals or pesticides in the context of environmental exposure

　　• Development of analytical methods for detecting the presence of pharmaceuticals or pesticides within environmental samples (water, sediment and soil) for emerging contaminants of concern (i.e., pharmaceuticals, pesticides, personal care products)

　　Applicants must have a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry, civil engineering, water/soil chemistry, water quality, or related field from an accredited institution; experience with laboratory determination of pharmaceuticals or pesticides in environmental samples and maintenance/use of laboratory equipment used during said analyses (GC, LC, GC-MS and/or LC-MS); experience in one or more of the following topical areas: 1) Delineation of the fate of organic contaminants within the environment, 2) Quantification of the rate of degradation and transport of organics within the environment, 3) Development of novel methods for degrading pharmaceutical or pesticides in water supply systems, 4) Development of analytical methods, 5) Assessment of risk or epidemiology of organic contaminant; ability to conduct field work in southern Nevada
