The BE Series of Galilean Beam Expanders can expand or reduce
the diameter of a collimated beam with an introduced wavefront
error of less than λ/4 (i.e. diffraction limited performance). An
expanded beam can be focused to a narrower diffraction limited
waist, while a reduced beam is sometimes necessary for use with
optics or instruments with narrow input apertures like the SA200
family of scanning Fabry-Perot interferometers (see page 648).
The compact, rugged housing contains a plano-concave singlet and
a doublet that is designed to minimize aberrations in the recollimated
beam. Both optics have broadband AR coatings to minimize surface
reflection, and the interior surface of the beam expander housing is
rough and matte black in order to minimize stray light from internal
reflections. A rotary barrel controls the adjustment of the collimating
lens, and the beam expander can be mounted via a threaded hole or a
mounting ring, which are both located on the plane that is coincident
with the center of gravity of the beam expander and perpendicular to
the optical axis. Depending on the model, the hole has #4-40 or #8-
32 threads that are compatible with the mini series or TR series posts,
respectively. The mounting ring is either one or two inches in
diameter and allows the beam expander to be secured into a KS1 or
KS2 kinematic mount, respectively. The BE02M, BE10M, BE15M,
and BE20M all have SM threaded input and output apertures, which
allow additional lenses and filters to be installed easily along the
optical axis of the beam expander by using a Thorlabs lens tube. The
BE03M and BE05M have SM threaded input apertures and M36
threaded output apertures.
