In a global response to increasing health and environmental concerns, there has been a trend towards governments enacting legislation to encourage sustainable manufacturing where industry creates products that minimize environmental impact. This legislative trend seeks to shift the environmental responsibility of product manufacturing to the finished goods manufacturer. To meet this new responsibility, data relevant to the material composition of a product must flow unimpeded from the raw material producers to the final producers. Unfortunately, existing systems are ill-prepared to handle the new data requirements. For example, the European Union’s (EU) Energy Using Product (EuP) Directive will require that companies provide total energy used during a product’s lifecycle,including manufacturing and transportation energy. To meet these new requirements, new systems must be designed and implemented, or modifications made to existing data management systems. Because every law poses its own unique requirements on industry, it is not always clear what information will need to be collected and stored. This paper seeks to provide industry with a forward-looking view at new data exchange requirements needed within the manufacturing supply chain of the future. The development of a rapid, accurate and cost-effective method for the prediction of constituents related to soil nitrogen (N) supply is considered important. Application of polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gelelectrophoresis for comparison of direct and indirect extraction methods of soil DNA used for microbial community fingerprinting

We used polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) to compare bacterial community patterns obtained with target DNA extracted from a soil by direct and indirect methods. For this purpose, two direct extraction methods, i.e. cell lysis by bead beating and cell disruption by grinding in liquid N, and two indirect methods, i.e. cell extraction followed by DNA extraction, and combined RNA/DNA extraction from the bacterial cell fraction, were performed. Crude extracts were purified and amplified using universal bacterial primers. PCR products were then analysed by DGGE, and similarity between the profiles obtained was determined by unweighted pair group with mathematical averages clustering. The results showed clear profiles that presumably represented the dominant bacterial fractions in the samples.The profiles generated by all four methods were similar,indicating that the methods were of approximately equal efficiency in the extraction of target DNA representative of the soil bacterial community. A simplified procedure for extracting ions from soil with ion-exchange resins is reported. The resin, placed in nylon-netting bags, were immersed in soil suspensions and shaken. Compared to the conventional procedure, where the resin beads are freely suspended in the soil-water mixture, this bag-procedure allowed quicker separation of resin from the soil suspensions. Furthermore, the severe soil grinding as done in the conventional procedure was eliminated. Phosphate was extracted from 4 Danish soils using both procedures. The bag-procedure resulted in slightly higher values than did the conventional procedure.

Nanocrystalline powders of a soft FeNbLi-doped PZT material have been prepared by a novel mechanochemical process consisting of mixing the stoichiometric oxides in a planetary ball mill for prolonged times up to 80 h. The constituent oxides were reacted in a tungsten carbide vial with balls of 5, 10 and 20 mm in diameter and a ball/powder ratio of 15/1. The chemical reaction between the component oxides was triggered after 20 h of energetic milling and was completed after 80 h. The XRD of the reacted nanopowder showed the well known perovskite structure. Compacted samples of this powder were sintered between 800–1300◦C for 3 h and the main piezoelectric properties were determined. The density of the sintered samples reached nearly 99% of the theoretical density at 1100◦C and showed good piezoelectric characteristics: planar coupling factor of 0.66, dielectric displacement constant d33 of 550 pm/V, mechanical quality factor of 85, and relative dielectric constant of 3800. The possible mechanisms for solid staeaction of mechanically activated nanopowders such as local heating and pressure at collision as well as defects diffusion are discussed. The mechanical alloying process has been recognized as a novel technique in synthesizing stable and metastable alloys through solid-state reaction without involving melting. However, many invstigators are well aware that the milling time necessary to complete the formation of metastable phases is strongly dependent on the milling conditions such as the type of mill, the size and number of balls and the motion of the balls. For instance, mechanical alloying experiments have been extensively carried out on the Ni-Zr alloy system. The milling time for the completion of the amorphization for Ni:Zr--1:1 powders is distributed over 20-400 h [1-5]. This clearly indicates that the milling conditions affect very sensitively the milling time to produce a final product.
