Indigo is a so-called vat dye, which means that it needs to be reduced to its water soluble leuco-form before dying. The reduced form is absorbed into the fibres, and when oxidized back to its blue form it stays within the fibre. Earlier the reduction and dyeing was done with fermentation. Nowadays, the most of the reduction has been done chemically by sodium dithionite.

The method is suitable for edible fats and oils such as butter, olive, palm or sunflower oil. The acid number is the quantity of base, expressed in milligrams of potassium hydroxide, that is required to neutralize all acidic constituents present in 1 g of sample. The calculation of the % FFA depends on the titrated type of sample.

The alkalinity of water is a measure of its capacity to neutralise acids. The alkalinity of natural water is due to the salts of carbonate, bicarbonate, borates, silicates and phosphates along with the hydroxyl ions in free state. However the major portion of the alkalinity in natural waters is caused by hydroxide, carbonate and bicarbonates with may be ranked in order of their association with high pH values. Alkalinity values provide guidance in applying proper doses of chemicals in water and waste water treatment processes, particularly in coagulation and softening.
