Modeling in the chemical industry is traditionally done using one independent
variable, examples being time for CSTR (Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor) or
reactor length when modeling tubular reactors. Dealing with one variable in this way
usually implies the solution of systems of ordinary differential equations that describe
material and energy balances. It was not until recent years that modeling using more
than one independent variable—such as time and space or several space variables—has
become important. In large-scale production, small design changes brought about by
simulation studies can lead to large savings in energy and material. In fine chemicals
and pharmaceuticals, modeling and design using PDEs can lead to high, uniform
product quality.
This course provides an introduction to modeling with the Chemical Engineering
Module, for solving the PDEs obtained in material and energy balances, and to the
new Reaction Engineering Lab, which automatically defines these balances from
reaction formulas. This printed material contains ready-made examples that guide you
through the modeling procedure using those two packages.
The exercises do not require any prior expertise in mathematical modeling to be
rewarding.
Enjoy your modeling!
