TheBendixCorporationmarketedthefirstcommercialtime-of-flightmassanalyser,basedonthedesignoftheWileyMacLareninstrument,inthelate1950's.HoweverTOFMSsufferedfrompoorresolutionanddidnotbegintobecomeaviablemassspectrometrytechniqueuntilthearrivalofaffordablefasttimingelectronicsinthe1970's.Korecanclaimtobeinvolvedinthisrenaissanceoftime-of-flightmassspectrometry.In1978oneofKore'sfoundersdesignedtheworld'sfirstlasermicroprobe,witha"Mamyrin"reflectrontime-of-flightmassanalyser,forbulk(solid)sampleanalysis.Thisinstrumentwasinitiallydesignedforhydrogenembrittlementstudiesatweldboundariesandsubsequentinstrumentswereappliedtomaterialsanalysisandmicroelectronicsapplications.
